When we embarked on this job during our experience directing for creative collective Nakd (in Toronto), little did we know it would lead us down a path to being one of the go-to directors for photoreal flowers. Beyond the technical challenges we faced, though, the toughest thing about these spots was the necessity for absolute restraint. The simplicity of the staging, camera work, and sound design gives the spots an almost haiku-like quality. If the VO sounds familiar, that's because it is Richard Dreyfuss' brother (who sounds just like him).
On the first day of the project, we out to the nearest flower shop and purchased a stargazer Lily, photographed it, then meticulously took it apart so that we could extract colour and texture from the individual parts on a scanning bed. We then dried out the parts and re-photographed them several days later when they had fully wilted. For the ultrasound machine, we based the design on an existing Siemens model ultrasound machine. It was all worth the effort when during the online we were asked who the DP was.
Each of the fully CGI spots was part of a PSA campaign for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, a non-profit group dedicated to furthering research and education on preventing heart disease and stroke. Retrospectively, it was a great privilege to lend our skills to the communication of a strong message of health.
