CREDITS
Production Company: Tendril Design+Animation Inc.
Created by: Yaniv Fridman, Daniel Luna
Music & Sound Design: Roger Lima of WhiteNoise Lab

ABOUT
To Do List is a simple and sweet personal project about the things Tendril director Daniel Luna and longtime collaborator/friend Yaniv Fridman cherish and aspire to do in their every day lives.

For ages the two directors had talked about working on a personal project of this kind, though life continued full-speed ahead. Time could not be sought. A beautiful baby boy was even born somewhere in the mix. The collaboration finally began with Daniel in Brazil and Yaniv in Mexico. Together, the two completed and launched it on the heels of Daniel's signing to our Toronto studio as Tendril's newest director.

On the process side of things, To Do List began with a list of twenty-five to-do’s true to what the directors wished to get more (and less) out of life. The list was narrowed down by importance, and the final selection was based upon what would read best. Some to-do’s got scrapped because they couldn’t be represented as strongly through animation as others. Keeping it simple and fresh was always the goal.

In terms of treatment, there was a shared passion for an animation style that strikes a balance between illustration and 3D. The distinct style that features consistently throughout the piece is intended to be stripped of realism and tends more towards illustration.

On the technical end, Illustrator and Photoshop were used for the design, AfterEffects for compositing and animation, and Cinema 4D for the rest of the animation. Daniel + Yaniv are self-proclaimed typophiles, and had collected hundred of fonts they purchased, loved, and never used. The two knew they wanted to incorporate many quirkier typefaces that may have too much character for boards, but certainly deserve a place in a project like this one.

Many thanks go out to Roger Lima at WhiteNoise Lab for his perfectly suited sound design, without which the piece would not have fully achieved the bright and optimistic mood it exudes.

The task for Bell Galaxy was to create the cosmos out of nothing; to take the viewer on a journey across unfathomable distances and gazillions of years in time to reveal that it's all within the Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE Smartphone. The catch: we had just three weeks to create the universe within thirty seconds—a cosmic irony not lost on us.

The collaboration process with the creative team at Leo Burnett was a breeze, and there was a constant bouncing around of ideas during the pre-visualization process. This was one of our tightest deadlines to date, so that initial one-week previs process intended to lock-down camera moves was crucial for our team. From there, we were able to move into refining the animation, and to start rendering full-res elements including space dust, planets, asteroid belts, nebulae, and all kinds of other super-cool-geeky-space-details.

In addition to the challenge of a super tight schedule was the challenge of effectively capturing the sense of scale and travel across a huge comsic distance in a matter of seconds. The camera had to move at great speeds while maintaining visibly intricate details to ensure the viewing experience is as captivating as possible. The solution ultimately involved quite a bit of 'cheating' of scale and distances between objects, as well as clever transitions and blends accomplished with layers of elements in compositing.

Alongside the :30 TV spot, we were also asked to create a futuristic spaceship for the outdoor print campaign, which was rendered in glorious 14K resolution. The result of it can be seen among the process stills below..

PROCESS

Despite the light-speed turn-around on this project, we thoroughly toiled over concepts, sketches, designs, and obsessed over (literally) a universe of details. Below is a small cross-section of that process, along with the many renderings we did of the spaceship for print.

Our first project as part of the Blacklist family seemed relatively straight forward at the outset: A greenscreen shoot followed by design and integration with CG environments. Once we really got down to business, however, as with anything that needs to be cut-free and seamless, we realized that the technical aspects of the project would keep us busy right up to delivery.

On a story level, we wanted to convey the idea that in this house we had all the members of a family simultaneously and effortlessly using bandwidth on various devices. The high-level of stylization in the colour and design of the environments meant this human presence was all the more critical. Unanimously, the single biggest creative and technical challenge was in working out the mechanics of camera and transitions between scenes and rooms.

During the pre-production phase, after getting signoff on a rough storyboard, we moved into a detailed previs and set-layout for the spot. In some of the wireframes below you can see the rig that we ended up with, which allowed us to swap in new versions of the rooms downstream in the production process. The rotations and transitions are a combination of camera rotations and also rotation of the entire set. The transitions from interior to exterior were handled in the compositing stage. On shoot day we used the previs to time and line-up our live action so that we knew we were getting footage that would fall into position nicely with our CG camera work.

For the exterior shots, the level of realism required meant that everything had to be modeled. By everything, we mean literally everything..... shingles, blades of grass, cracks in pavement it's all there to the tune of 1,684,107,560 polygons. Relish editor Steve Manz worked with us on the cut and 567vfx worked on pulling keys and integrating footage elements into our CG 'plates'.

A very special shout-out goes to local Toronto fashion designer Jessica Mary Clayton who did our wardrobe styling and also 'Particle' the Tendril studio dog, who's staggering performance as the 'walking dog' has set a new bar for canine talent in the industry.

Production Company: Tendril Design+Animation Inc.

Music & Sound Design: John Black of CypherAudio
Animation: Leo Mateus, Vini Nascimento, Andrew Vucko

ABOUT
Tendril is a relatively young studio and we are always looking for ways to experiment with the brand and its possibilities. The logo—still in flux—is subject to this evolutionary process and often gets deconstructed, questioned, and restructured in different ways. In the case of this exploration, spearheaded by senior studio artists Leo Mateus and Vini Nascimento, the intention was to reduce the logo / wordmark into a lunchbox of minimal geometric elements and then create a sound-synchronized reconstruction sequence ala Oskar Fischinger. If you have seen our 2011 Showreel, you may recognize some of the animation, which was intercut there to form a visual backbone for the edit.

Once the animation was complete, we sought out the musical wizardry of John Black who initially worked to find a tempo that worked with the flow of the visuals, and then gradually built up the final track in layers, adding sound design elements to synchronize with the different geometric elements.

This is our second project with John McIntyre and his crew at Agency59 (the first was last year's 'Do The World a Favour' campaign for recycling electronics). From the get-go we knew that it was going to be a challenge given the quantity of information that would need to be clearly conveyed, the wall-to-wall VO, as well as the fact that we had a wallet—with a speaking role!—as our central character. Our strategy was to keep the design visually minimal and graphic as possible, relying on unexpected twists, snappy animation timing, and quick transitions to establish and maintain the pace.

On a technical level, because of the complex deformations, dimensionality, and lipsync the script called for, the wallet was rigged and animated in 3D, but rendered with flat colours to look 2D. Some other elements like the coins were also handled this way. The rest of the elements were animated in After Effects. In the end, we had a huge amount of fun creating this piece and hope you enjoy watching it!

For years we have had an urge to create a character-driven animation piece and although we have designed characters and formulated stories around them in treatments both internally and for clients, nothing really stuck or gained much traction. In this industry, with character work in particular, just as with live action direction, just saying you are ready to do something and having exciting ideas and designs is not going to cut it—you need demonstrable, production-proven skills. It's a chicken and egg problem.

For us, the opportunity came knocking in the Fall of 2010 disguised in the form of a pitch for 'Funcheez'. The script called for slapstick comedy played out by aliens on a planet made of cheese. The aliens would narrowly avert being sucked into a blackhole, which by the end of the spot was to be revealed as the imaginings of a kid munching on Funcheez Moons & Planets.

We got excited and pulled out all the stops for the pitch. We designed characters and environments, drew up storyboards, colour boards, and boardomatics. We developed a motion test and even had our characters rapid prototyped for the presentation. At one point early in the process, we even brought in a savvy five-year-old to get perspective on 'kid-appeal'. The pitch was beautiful and fun, but in the end the client decided to go with another studio for the spot. But it was too late—we had somehow fallen completely in-love with our strange little alien creatures and rather than relegating them to our salon des refusés to gather dust, decided to take the plunge and build a story around them. We got even more excited and pulled out stops we didn't even know we had.

A lot of ideas were thrown out on the table and at least as many ended up the recycling bin. After a short, intense period of exploration, we decided on a very simple story framework that would allow us to push the character animation to a high polish that any discerning eye would appreciate. We also wanted it to be funny. At the studio we are always taking the piss out of each other and the level of joking around, laughing, and overall stupidity is how we gauge our level of morale.

On the production end, we implemented a rigorous multi-stage character animation process that has set a standard how we handle all our character work. First there is the Blocking Pass, where key poses, overlaps, anticipations, facial expressions, and lip sync are set as stepped keys. Following a few rounds of blocking, the stepped keys are turned into splines for the Spline Pass and animation curves are tweaked. Eventually overlaps and secondary motion are also added. Once the motion has been refined to everybody's satisfaction, we move to the final stage, the Quality Control Pass where intersections are fixed and minor adjustments are made. As a general rule, we spend 65% of our time on the first pass, 30% on the second and 5% on the final pass.

As usual, we knew that music and sound design would play a super-critical role in the piece and so we turned to our long-time collaborator John Black of Cypheraudio. Whenever we hear those robotic grunts and bleeps we picture John in his studio with a folly mic vocalizing and acting out the emotions of our characters and we laugh ourselves to tears.

ANIMATION RIG DEMO

Here is a little screencapture of one of Pepe's kick-ass rigs. After finishing animation, we used a maxscript that Pepe wrote for us to automate the point caching of the 40 or so meshes that each of the characters was made up of.

Leo Mateus

ABOUT
With words like 'Amazing', 'Brilliant', and 'Awesome' as the centrepieces of this large campaign for Bell's new IP-based television service, the expectation for visuals was set pretty high. After an initial meeting with the team at Leo Burnett, a 'Droste' style pullback from one TV to another was set as the basic framework of the spot. Back at the studio, following a series of intense brainstorming and sketching sessions, we agreed to take the idea a step further by creating a series of fully fledged 'FibeTV' universes and then bookending them with the classic Bell white world.

With each of these universes, our intention was to convey a grand-scale cinematic experience and spectacle that gives the viewer a taste of what only FibeTV can offer. On the production end, we used every tool, trick, and talent up our sleeves and called upon our strongest and most favoured collaborators. Several weeks later, we stopped to look at this melange of giant robots, spitfire's, Pandorean manta rays and misty mountain air balloonscapes—all in :30s and we agreed that it was definitely awesome. PROCESS

As with all our work, a lot of time was spent toiling over concepts, sketching, designing, throwing away and obsessing over details. Below is a small cross-section of that process.

COMPOSITING BREAKDOWN

And finally, for any hardcore nerds still reading this far down on the page, here is a compositing breakdown showing some of the various layers and passes we used to create the final look of the giant robot shot.

Every now and again, luck graces us with a welcome break from the software-bug-ridden world of complex 3D animation. This project, first doodled on paper, then cell animated, and later composited on live action footage was created to give the impression of having actually been painted on the walls and surfaces of the environment ala BLU. The various illustrations are meant to suggest an imagination running wild with the possibilities and potential of Futureshop's electronic products.

For the live action shoot, we called on friend Shelley Lewis who worked closely with us during the pre-production stage as we storyboarded and planned out shots that would help best convey the flow and transitions we had envisioned for the spot. Back at the studio, Relish editor Chris Murphy worked to fine-tune the flow of the cut as 567vfx worked tirelessly to perfect the integration of hand rendered animation onto our footage.

Beyond a :30 TV spot, we also generated hundreds of illustrations for the broader print and online campaign as well as a :15 Cinema spot. Our apologies to all you parents out there if your teenager comes to you asking for a new laptop, tablet AND mobile this coming Fall.

OpenText is a large Canadian software firm that does enterprise-scale content management for a very long and closely guarded list of clients. So what does that mean exactly? What is content and what do you gain from managing it? When the team from OpenText first came to visit the studio to discuss the project we were immediately intrigued and inspired to find a means of translating the vision and purpose of OpenText into a cinematic visual experience.

We worked together over the course of the conceptual phase of the project to narrow in on a high-level, aspirational script that would do most of the heavy lifting, and pair it with visuals that would remain textural and beautiful rather than strict literal representations — A visual metaphor that would create a emotional response in the viewer and so also with the OpenText brand.

From this, emerged the idea of representing 'content' in its many forms as stylized paper-like documents, with live data shimmering across their surfaces. We open the film on a single sheet of content, then slowly reveal a vast sea of chaotic, unmanaged content. As the film progresses, we see the content gradually become more organized, moving intelligently like a flock of birds, and forming organized stacks. As the content is harnessed, its possibilities and potential are revealed.

On a technical level, much of the content animation was handled using Lagoa Technologies' powerful multiphysics simulation engine. Over the course of the project we simulated more than half a million 'pages' and generated over 45GB of simulation data. Lagoa was also extended in order to create the flocking behavior seen in some shots.

Lastly, it would be wrong not to mention that the team from OpenText was incredibly supportive over the course of the project, sharing our desire to make a beautiful thing and proved to be an exciting creative partner!
